24-Hour Open Source Software Web Application Development Contest will be held in conjunction with MyGOSSCON 2009.

The goals of this contest are:

  • Promote high level open source web application development skills in Malaysia.
  • Enable local OSS web application development communities to grow and establish themselves.
  • Encourage students to get involve in open source web application development and be well prepared for industry need.

Teams interested to participate in this contest are required to submit the Contest Entry Form to OSCC MAMPU latest by 11 October 2009 20 October 2009.

Contest Team

This contest is open to contest teams comprised of between two (2) to five (5) individuals. No more than five (5) people are allowed in a team.

All team members must be Malaysian with a valid MyKAD.

Contest team can be formed by:

  • Student group representing its own institute of higher learning. Any public or private institute of higher learning under the governance of Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) can send representative team to participate in this contest.
  • Open group formed by Malaysian. Any two (2) to five (5) Malaysians from any organisations and individuals can form a contest team to participant in this contest.

Contest team must provide full information on the name of team, team detail, technical detail, etc. for acceptance consideration.

8 teams will be shortlisted to participate in this contest on 4 November 2009. Shortlisting of contest team will be based on information provided in the Contest Entry Form.

Shortlisted contest teams will be announced on 15 October 2009 23 October 2009. The selection of shortlisted contest teams is at the sole discretion of the organiser.

Prizes

Prizes are given to the winning team as follow:
1st prize: RM5,000 cash
2nd prize: RM3,000 cash
3rd prize: RM1,500 cash

As an encouragement to the student teams representing their school to participate in this contest, a Best Student Team Award of RM2,000 cash will be given to the student team producing the best product among themselves, regardless the student team has or has not won any of the above three prizes of this contest.

All contest winners are required to attend the Prize Giving Ceremony on 6th November 2009.

Contest activity

All shortlisted contest teams are required to develop a simple generic open source web application at the designated contest area in Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) during the MyGOSSCON 2009 event.

Contest teams are given 24 hours for the web application development and deployment from 4th November 11am until 5th November 11am.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served during the contest period. Free flow of water and snacks will also be available to all contestants throughout the 24 hours contest period.

The development subject for this contest will be announced on 4th November 9am at the contest area.

The development island for each contest team will be provided with:

  • Table and five (5) chairs
  • Two (2) electrical plug points
  • A network point
  • A Linux PC computer to host the web application

Contest team are required to bring in their own electrical extension, network switch, etc. if applicable.

Contestants can bring in own laptop computers and reference books into the contest room before the contest started. No computers or books are allowed to enter or exit the contest room during the 24 hours contest period.

The developed web application must be deployed to the designated Linux server before 5th November 11am.

Each contest team are then given twenty (20) minutes to present and demo their web application to the panel of judges. Contestants have to allocate reasonable time for Q&A with the judges within the given 20 minutes time period.

Important information to shortlisted contesting teams

What to bring to the contest?
You can bring your own laptop(s), reference books, network switch (to link up your laptops), electrical extension plugs, network cables, etc. as applicable.

You may also bring your own pillow, sleeping bag, toothpaste, toothbrush, shaver, clothes to change, etc. for staying overnight in the contest hall.

The Linux PC provided in the contest
Each contest team will be provided with a Linux PC installed with basic LAMP environment. The PC will be used to host the application developed by your team. You are required to connect to this PC (the server) from another computer with web browser (the client) via network for your product demo to the judges on 5 November 2009.

You may install additional components into the Linux PC. You may even format the PC with your own choice of open source Linux or FreeBSD. Remember to bring along the installation CD(s) to the contest in case you intend to do so.

Note that only open source software and/or components are allowed in the Linux PC provided.

You will be given an extra hour to setup and configure the PC before the contest begin.

Network setting
Each contest team will be given 9 internal IP addresses for your own allocation. Note that one of the allocated IP addresses will be occupied by the Linux PC provided by the organiser.

Basic Internet access is available for you to connect to the Internet when needed. Connection from Internet to the LAN in the contest hall is not possible. Note that the organiser does not guarantee on the Internet access quality and/or availability.

Only one LAN port will be provided to each contest team, and that LAN port will be used by the Linux PC to host your product. If you need network connection for your laptop(s), remember to bring your own switch and sufficient network cables.

Accessing the Internet with your own 3G, HSDPA, WiMax or other wireless devices is not prohibited. However, the organiser does not warrant if the wireless signal from your service provider is able to reach the contest hall or not.

Entering and exit the contest hall

To minimize the possibility of unpleasant circumstances, such as lost of property, NO computer equipment, book etc. is allowed to enter or exit the contest hall once the contest started and before the contest end.

All the contest team members must be present in the contest hall during the following time periods:

4 November 2009 8.30am-12.00pm
5 November 2009 9.30am-2.00pm

During the above time period, only one of your contest team members may leave the contest hall for not more than 10 minutes at any time (for going to washroom, etc.).

During the period from 4 November 12.01pm to 5 November 9.29am, at least one of your team members must be present in the contest hall. Team leaders might want to make use of this allowance to schedule for duty and rest roster for the team members.

VVIP & VIP Visit
All contest teams must be aware and well prepared that the VVIP & VIP of MyGOSSCON 2009 will visit the contest hall in the morning of 5 November 2009.

Attire
Smart casual attire is required during the following time period:

5 November 2009 9.30am-2.00pm

For other time period, casual attire is allowed as long as you are properly dressed and covered which does not violate the religious and/or general ethics code.

Food and drink
Food and drink will be freely provided by the organiser along the contest period. Outside food and drink which must be Halal, does not have strong smell and won’t affect the contestants in the contest hall is not prohibited.

Note that the contest hall is a non-smoking area. Also, no drug is allowed.

Presentation and demo
After the programming timeframe ended (estimated time: between 11am to 2pm), each contest team will have twenty (20) minutes to present and demo their web application to the panel of judges.

You are encouraged to:
Make use of presentation slides. OpenOffice.org Impress is recommended for this purpose.
Introduce your team members to the judges.
Focus your presentation to the judging criteria, which are: functionality, user interface, innovation & originality, usefulness, W3C compliance and security.
Perform a demo of your web application.
Emphasis to the judges why your team should win.
Allocate about 5 minutes for the Q&A session.

Tips
The web application to be developed for this contest will have a simple process flow, need to have front-end and back-end (back office processing) user interface, need to make use of database with a few tables, and need to be able to send out email from the system.
